Welcome to Heart Radiance Flutes! I'm Thomas Heikes, and I craft every instrument in my shop entirely by hand in my personal workshop in Krestova, British Columbia. This split drone flute represents some of my most involved work, a more complex instrument built for players ready to explore a deeper, more expressive range.

About This Flute
This is a two-chamber Native American style wooden split drone flute in the key of D, tuned to 440 Hz. It comes with a custom handmade flute bag. 2025 batch, D drone, #1. The stone inlays are mother of pearl, tiger's eye, malachite, shungite, and carnelian.

SPLIT DRONE: This flute has an additional alternate hole on the drone chamber, not found on a standard drone flute. This allows you to change the drone note during play, creating a more powerful and versatile sound. It is more complex to play and is not intended for beginners, but the musical range it opens up is truly remarkable. Watch the YouTube video to hear what it can do.

Flute Woods
I craft this flute from carefully selected woods: a sitka spruce body for exceptional frequency resonance and tonal clarity, black walnut at the tip and bottom for strength and balance, and a maple cap secured with genuine deer hide leather ties.

Flute Finish
I seal all my flutes with a highly durable, food-safe finish designed to last a lifetime with no maintenance required. I use the highest-quality protective coating I can apply, carefully crafted to provide deep, lasting protection. Though it requires extra care in application, this finish allows the wood's voice to remain clear, vibrant, and full, setting these flutes apart with both durability and exceptional sound.

Flute Type & Key
This is a split drone style Native American inspired flute with two chambers that create a rich drone harmony beneath the main flute voice. The added drone makes the sound more dynamic and engaging, giving the flute a fuller presence and a sense of movement. The alternate drone hole takes this further, allowing the player to shift the drone pitch mid-performance.

This flute is tuned to D minor pentatonic, a deep, full, lower register that is much heavier than my standard F# drone flutes. It has an absolutely beautiful and powerful tone, and is best suited to sound healing, ceremony, and intentional, expressive playing. Because of the lower tuning, this flute is larger and heavier, with bigger finger holes and wider spacing. Players with moderate to smaller hands may find it challenging to hold comfortably. This is not a beginner instrument. It rewards those who come to it with patience and experience.

The key of D plays easily alongside many other instruments, making it a strong choice for collaborative settings as well.

About Heart Radiance
Every single aspect of my flutes I craft from the very beginning with the deepest intention of infusing love and healing into them. With many years of experience, I am honored to share them with you. It is a real passion and gift to bring more medicine music into the world. These are not beginner novelties. They are precision-tuned, high-quality instruments crafted with immense care and attention to detail, including beautiful crushed and whole stone inlays. Each flute reflects the time, energy, and devotion poured into its creation.

Free Course
I've put together a free introductory video course covering how to choose the right flute and key, some basics on how to play, and how to care for your instrument:

Ref: 4434141928
