This D'Almaine & Co 4-key boxwood flute exemplifies the craftsmanship of a respected London maker from the mid-19th century. The instrument is in remarkably exceptional condition for its age, with the light, responsive feel characteristic of quality boxwood construction.

The flute features a well-cut embouchure with a sweet, responsive tone that speaks readily across the range. Tuning is quite good overall, with minor adjustments easily managed through lipping: the F# responds well to a slight upward lip adjustment, while the A and B require only minimal downward lipping to bring into tune.

The instrument has been carefully maintained. The right-hand section shows a subtle hairline crack originating from the tenon that has been sealed, and there is a hairline crack on the socket ring of the right-hand section. These repairs are stable and do not affect playability. Overall, the flute remains in truly exceptional shape for an instrument of this vintage.

D'Almaine & Co operated as a London woodwind maker and music seller at 38 Soho Square during the 1836-58 period, continuing a legacy of instrument making excellence from earlier partnerships. The flute bears the characteristic London maker's stamp from this era.

This is a genuinely playable antique flute with the character and responsiveness that makes period instruments rewarding for serious players.
