This is a late 19th-century rosewood 8-key flute stamped Kaloton with a Maltese cross (Now both faded). The Kaloton stamp is understood to be a dealer or trade name rather than an individual maker, and examples of this mark appear on other flutes from the same period, sometimes alongside known makers’ stamps. Instruments bearing this mark are generally believed to have been manufactured in Germany or Bohemia for export and later sold in Britain. The flute is representative of the type of keyed instruments widely used in military and folk band contexts during the late 1800s.

The original headjoint has been restored and is functional, though it does not produce a strong bottom D. When tested in the shop with a modern Irish flute headjoint, the instrument responds well and plays with excellent intonation at A440 Hz, making it a good option for a player who already owns a compatible modern headjoint.

The foot ring has split, as shown in the photos; this does not affect playability. All keys function very well with the exception of the low C and C♯ keys, which are not currently operational.
